My journey into the world of sheepdog training began on a whim

My journey into the world of sheepdog training began on a whim, thanks to a friend’s suggestion to check out the Scottish Highland Games in Vista, California. She mentioned there would be a sheepdog trial, and I was curious—especially since I was already looking for a second dog and considering a Border Collie for their athleticism and drive.

Once we arrived, I found myself glued to the trial field for eight hours under the hot Southern California sun, completely captivated. I instantly fell in love—with the dogs, the work, and the incredible connection between handler and stockdog.

The trial was being run by Terry Parrish and Terry Folsom, and at one point they announced to the crowd, “If you're interested in getting into sheepdog herding, come talk to us!” So I did. That following Monday, I called Terry Parrish for advice on finding a dog. I’ll never forget what she told me: “Don’t get a rescue. If you’re serious, get a well-bred working Border Collie.” She happened to know of some pups on the ground.

Two weeks later, I brought home Cole—a 7-month-old puppy—and by September 2018, we were officially in training. Just over a year later, in December 2019, we ran our first Nursery trial in Ranchita, California. Standing at the post, nerves buzzing and adrenaline high, I knew I was hooked.

From that point forward, herding became more than a hobby—it became my passion and my work. I actively compete in USBCHA trials with my three Border Collies—Cole, Ciaran, and Bryce—and love helping others experience the same excitement I felt that very first day.

Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to achieve milestones I once only dreamed of. In 2023, my dogs and I qualified for our first USBCHA National Finals at Strang Ranch in Carbondale, Colorado, where Cole and I advanced to the semi-finals, finishing 22nd overall. Kat and her current nursery dog, Bryce, have qualified to compete in the 2025 National Finals in Alturas, California.

Along the way, I’ve shared my passion through teaching. From 2020 to 2024, I worked as a herding instructor at Action K9 Sports in Escondido, California, where I taught a wide range of breeds and handlers, from beginners to seasoned competitors. In 2024, I expanded my experience even further—first as a shepherd and instructor at Zenda Farms Preserve in upstate New York, then traveling to Florida to assist with flock care and instruction, and finally relocating to Colorado to join Strang Ranch as an instructor and trainer.

Today, I love mentoring handlers of all experience levels. Whether your goal is a reliable chore dog, your first trial, or simply enjoying a new activity with your dog, I tailor lessons to fit your needs. My greatest joy is seeing handlers and dogs build confidence, trust, and teamwork together—just as I did when I first stepped onto that trial field in Vista.
