All-Breed Sheepdog
Training
Whether you’re interested in competing in trials, developing a reliable chore dog, or just having fun with your dog, Kat Hammond Stockdogs offer personalized herding lessons tailored to your goals. I work with all types of herding breeds, as each dog have different styles to moving stock.
New to Herding?
In this fun and engaging experience, the dog, its owner, and a trainer enter a small pen with friendly, tame sheep. The goal is to encourage the dog to start moving sheep, with the owner playing the role of a supportive cheerleader to keep the atmosphere light and enjoyable. As the dog begins to show interest and involvement, we guide them through their very first herding adventure, helping them build confidence and skills in this exciting new activity.
Introducing your dog to herding
When evaluating a dog for herding, we look for one that shows a natural drive to move the sheep, by gathering around all the sheep and trying to keep them with the owner. However, if the dog starts by chasing, we can help the dog modify that behavior and teach them to go around the sheep. However, if the dog only chases and is unable to stop, they won't be suitable for herding. The ideal dog is one that can transition from chasing to a more controlled behavior, such as circling the stock, helping to gather them. This is the key trait we're looking for!

Lessons
Kat Hammond teaches you how to work your own dog. You'll learn how to use clear cues and body language to guide your dog in working sheep effectively. Kat also explains sheep behavior so you can understand why certain approaches work best. Each lesson is tailored to your dog’s breed and working style—because loose-eyed dogs don’t work the same way as strong-eyed dogs.
Lessons are one-on-one and tailored to you and your dog. We work in a variety of settings—pens, arenas, and open fields—depending on your experience and your dog’s level of training. As you both progress, you'll move into larger spaces and more advanced challenges. We can’t wait to meet you and your dog!

Board & Trains
Board-and-train options are available. This program allows me to work with your dog consistently over a set period, which can really accelerate their progress. It’s a great choice for clients who can’t make it to regular lessons or don’t have the time to start a young dog themselves. For dogs that haven’t been started yet, I require a minimum 90-day commitment.
In addition to herding training, your dog will be treated like one of my own. They’ll join me on trail runs, bike rides, and fun swim days, getting plenty of enrichment outside of the training field. At home, they’ll live in the house with my dogs and spend quiet nights crated for rest and downtime.
We'll have a chat about what you are looking to get out of your dogs stay with me, whether it's more trial focused, ranch work or basic foundation work.
Pricing:
$1625 for the month
